Fire!!!

Less than a week to go to Bonfire night. And you know what that means... Yes, it's time for Riddlesden Cricket Club to put on it's annual community bonfire. A free event that we hope as many people from the local area (and further afield - for example if you have friends/relatives visiting, bring them too) attend and enjoy.

There'll be the bonfire itself obviously, fireworks, a barbeque for the peckish, pie and peas for the even more peckish, soft drinks and hard drinks (it is a Saturday after all!) - you know all the stuff that makes bonfire night such an important part of the year in Britain. But why...?

History time!

Back in 1605 there was a plot - the Gunpowder Plot - to blow up the House of Lords and wipe out most of the Lords, Bishops and Royal court, and most importantly King James I. To do so, the plotters managed to stockpile 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath the main chamber where the King was due to open Parliament on the Fifth of November.

Unfortunately for the plotters, the authorities were tipped off anonymously beforehand, and on the night of November 4th a search was conducted. The gunpowder and the man tasked with lighting it were found just after midnight - that man was Guy Fawkes.

The plot failed, the King lived, the plotters didn't do so well, and the people celebrated by burning stacks of wood (weird celebration...), and a 400+ year tradition began!

So that's the what and the why. The where is Riddlesden Cricket Club ground, so that just leaves the when - Saturday 5th November from 6:30pm. And the long view weather forecast suggests it will be a dry night too!

The event takes a lot of hard work and it's all done by volunteers, so please come along on the night and repay the effort by having a whole lot of fun. The more the merrier!
