Good for the grass...

There was only one winner last weekend, and that was the weather.

Disappointingly the first rain in months, desperately needed by cricket clubs throughout the land, fell slap bang in the middle of match day when it wasn't welcome.

Just to rub it in, it stopped shortly after our match was abandoned...

Still, as all the games in our division were similarly washed out, no harm was done

to our promotion ambitions, indeed our run ratio improved markedly, so mustn't grumble.

There were two schools of thought on how to approach the game given the expectation of rain.

On the one hand, we prefer to bat first and bat big, so if the chance arose we should do so.

On the other hand, perhaps we should try to bowl Oakworth out cheaply and knock the target off before the rain arrived.

Opinions were split. Who'd be a captain?

In the event, we chose the former - and did score big. Steve Kernan finally got the half century his early season performances promised as he and Mohammad Qadeer (76) put on 112 for the first wicket. His dismissal for 58 brought Shanny to the crease, where he continued his excellent recent form batting impressively alongside Qaddy in another century stand to reach 78 himself. With our total at 221-1 Zain declared to give

us some hope of forcing a win.

Despite a wicket apiece for Shanny and Qaddy, Oakworth were content to block out waiting for the rain to return, which it eventually did with the score on 14-2 off 17 overs and washed out the remainder of the game.

This week we face Embsay 2nds at home. Last year's match resulted in an incredibly dramatic finale with six required off the last ball, and Danny Kernan duly providing the winning blow. Hopefully this year we'll win much easier...

Sunday sees us host our annual fun day in aid of Manorlands. There's a host of activities planned, bouncy castle, stalls, live music, barbeque, and the weather looks set to be excellent so come down from 2:30 to enjoy the fun.
